Mike, Kept my boat for three years after my friends that sailed with me either left, got too old to climb the mast or went to the big sail in the sky. What finally did me in was the insurance costs and demands on boaters in the Keys. Yearly, out-of-water inspections. Add that to a $1,500 yearly insurance bill and I said good-bye. Miss it ever time I drive by Garrison Bight and look forward to one day selling enough books to support a trawler

Oliver, I agree with you and I don't regret the years and the miles we've traveled on the boat. We are however looking forward to smelling the roses.

We had a good 6 years living on Isle of Venice but I do wish we'd been there in the earlier years when livaboards were not made to feel as if we were the poor relatives come to visit.

Diane, I think you're right about having a plan and that's one of the reasons we're going to consider all of our options before selling Rough Draft.

Beth, We're leaning more and more towards selling the boat and moving ashore, but we've decided to give ourselves a couple of months after we get back to the states to make the final decision.

The temporary swap is a great offer but if we get off the boat we plan to sell it outright. Besides, I did my stint in the country in the mid 70's when I moved to Maine, bought 10 acres and built a log cabin. I thought I would write and live off the land. Boy was I kidding myself.

In the 80's I moved to Minnesota and bought a 100 year old farmhouse on five acres and totally remodeled the house.

As for Mary, she grew up on a small truck farm and I think she'd rather go down with the ship then go back to living in the country.

Once we've made out final decision I plan to blog about it. If we put the boat up for sale I'll give all of the details then.

We went for 7 years living aboard and loved it til my knees got tired of the engine room and the bright work was a full year ahead of me. From 59 yo to 66 years old. I'll never regret it, but feel I went long enough. Remember, boats don't sell quickly- they keep making more of them and not nearly enough sink to keep the supply level.
Isle of Venice in Lauderdale is a nice place to wait for a buyer.
Our early months were spent on the New River at the City Marina where liveaboards were the rule. Now it's gone to Super Yachts and brokers. A real loss to the liveaboard community,
We enjoyed it immensely and wouldn't trade it for anything!...... But the flowers here on land are nice too..

We don't regret the decision at all. However, we had a solid plan about what we were going to do and where we were going to settle. I think that's important. After 12 years, I was more than ready. I think Bill would return to living aboard a motor yacht, which was my favorite of our liveaboards too, but he's also less apt to go anywhere because of the ties he has here (so what's the point?).

We were both thrilled when we sold Argonaut, our last sailboat, because we had accomplished what we'd set out to do and we did not want her to rot while sitting on the hard. Bill's still up to his elbows in boats, and model boats.

Oh, and yeah, we have a snow shovel! LOL

P.S. If you want to swap, we've got a 2500 sq ft renovated farmhouse, complete with full-size fridge and all the organic veggies you can eat (tended by someone else) and our little Hunter sailboat on the Pamlico. We'd love to do a temporary swap! Just say when!

I did give it up, about 1995, in order to try farming (face-palm, what was I *thinking*?) and to have kids (love it) and now I'm keen to get back on the water! Will Rough Draft be for sale soon, because we're in the market!! LOL! We're having a ton of fun on our little Hunter 23.5 trailer sailor exploring Pamlico Sound in beautiful NC. For now, it's what we can do between job and kids, but we're looking ahead a few years to the cruising life again!

Move North? John, w've know each other for what? seven--eight years. Have I really left you with the impression that I was nuts? Because the only thing nuttier than living in the frigid North is moving back there once you've left it.

Mike & Mary,
Just to clarify - would a decision to move onto land mean a return to a northern climate and re-investment in a snow shovel? If that's the case I suspect you will hear very consistent responses. I can't imagine that's what you have in mind, but just checking.
